Thirteen students, six judges and a  band of enthusiastic supporters participated in the Speak to the World English speech festival on 25 May 2011 at the Evangelical Lyceum Bratislava. Six finalists were selected from among all those who spoke with prepared speeches.  These speakers were asked to prepare an impromptu speech from a short list of available topics.  Winners from the third and fourth years were Kamila Souchova, Filip Fabian, and Martin Cavarga.  Winners among first and second year students were Natalia Kubalkova, Kristina Mojziosova, and Juraj Sagat.

“The purpose of the speech festival was not only to select the best speakers but also to give students a chance to demonstrate their public speaking ability and showcase what they are learning in their English classes,” said Professor William Fredell, one of the teachers who helped organize the event.  Professor Kathryn Fredell, the other organizer and speech coach, went on to say that everyone who participates in a public speaking event is a winner since these events give everyone a chance to demonstrate and improve their skills. “Without a real life event, we just don’t challenge ourselves to the maximum,” K. Fredell said.

Students who participated in the festival as well as Speech Kruzok sessions were  Martin Bais, Michaela Besedovea, Livia Bloyosova, Miroslav Cambel, Martin Cavarga, Filip Fabian, Natalia Kubalkova, Jakub Kondek, Richard Markovic, Kristina Mojziova, Laura Pellerova, Juraj Sagat, Kamila Souchova, Lucia Steltenpohlova.

The judges, all native speakers, included Pastors Anna Rudberg and Arden Haug, Professors Elizabeth Mitchell, Paul Stensvaag, Ben Leeny, Peter Spicer.  The speakers were evaluated on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, content, speech structure and rhetorical skills.
