What is an electronic grade book?
An electronic grade book is a student information system which is used to record pupils’ grades, attendance and other data which are then made available online to parents, students and administrators. The idea and practice are spreading throughout the world and becoming a sort of standard for each quality school. By using electronic grades, student can regularly monitor their achievement. Electronic grades help parents, which may also monitor the results of their children, the curriculum which is taught and events relating to school. Internet Pupils' book contains a wealth of features and is constantly adding new ones as required by individual schools. Each school is trying to streamline and improve learning as much as it´s possible.
What are the advantages to the school?
A school system does not install any programs as the administration involves standard web browsers and an Internet connection. A school can choose its own web address. It contains a simple section where you can add pupils, teachers and subjects. Section for editing marks by professors and section for viewing marks by students and their parents. Personal information about students will not be misused because of its high level of the protection against attacks by hackers. A class professor also can send private data directly to a student or to the parents. Installation of this program is free.
How is the system used at the Evanjelicke Lyceum?
The online grading system was created this year during the second half. Sometimes students get their scores or grades from their tests before the teachers give them their tests to look at during the lessons. So students are pretty well informed about their scores before seeing their tests. They are sure of what grade they reached and how many points could be reached and from which theme. Grades have to be written by the 15th day of the month. It is controlled by headmistress.
How much time does the new system require of teachers?
It takes a teacher about one hour to write every score or grade for every students in every one of a teacher’s classes. One disadvantage for teachers is that it requires additional work since the older systems are still being maintained along with the electronic one. This requires that teachers write grades three times. First at their notebook, second at grading sheet and third at electronic book on the internet. But the still unanswered question for many teachers is that they have to write the scores and grades three times at different places? They thought that if the electronic grade system will be approved they don´t have to write these three times.
Overall, the electronic grade system has more advantages than disadvantages. But still for teachers little bit negatives. But we hope to improve it.
What are the problems for students?
One of the disadvantage for students is that they might lose their registration number. But it can also be an advantage for them that their parents can´t look at their scores for some time if they get another registration number.
What are the advantages for teachers?
One of the big advantage for the teachers is that if they enter scores, it shows the average, points and percentage of every student.
What are parent reactions?
When my mom looked at my electronic grades she found that under the grades are the attendance times, too. The system monitors times that students enter and leave the school. I think it‘s a good informer to the parents because they know about their kid´s achievement and their arrival to the school.
What’s will happen with the system in the future?
Mostly the internet grading system has a positive response by students and their parents. They like to look at their grades whenever they want. I hope the system will be more and more improved and will satisfy the students, the teachers and the parents.
